Job Announcement: Project Manager, Deutsches Filminstitut

As part of the European co-operation project "EFG - The European Film Gateway", Deutsches Filminstitut -- DIF e.V. is looking for a
PROJECT MANAGER
working full-time from 1 September 2008. As project manager you will be responsible for the organisation and co-ordination of projects, working with project partners from involved institutions and the European Commission. The position is limited to three years.

The project

EFG -- The European Film Gateway is a project supported by the eContentplus programme of the European Commission. The project seeks to integrate various European film archives and cinematheques into the development of an online platform designed to present cultural heritage in a digital format and to provide access to a combined archive of catalogue data concerned with film. The EFG will be launched as part of the EC's Digital Libraries Initiative and will be working in close connection with other projects and initiatives, in particular the EDL Foundation. The EFG project will be co-ordinated by Deutsches Filminstitut - DIF e.V. in Frankfurt am Main/Germany and will incorporate 20 partner institutions from 14 European states. The main goals of the project are (a) the development of a central online information platform for European film heritage, together with the presentation of digital content and information provided by the institutions involved. This also entails (b) the integration of the content into the European Digital Library for presentation on www.europeana.eu. The project will be launched on 1 September 2008 and is scheduled for three years.

Your role

You will be working with a team at Deutsches Filminstitut in direct co-ordination with the head project manager. You will be in permanent contact with our partner institutions, in particular film archives and cinematheques. As project manager you will be responsible for keeping schedules and fulfilling project goals in planned quality and quantity. Even if you have not been trained in information technology you will nevertheless be able to bring your experience in managing projects with large IT components to the team. You will support our project partners in content-related and administrative work and make sure that all parties involved are always up to date with ongoing developments. You will take an active part in project meetings, workshops and conferences, as well as preparing such events. Furthermore you will be responsible for the administrative handling of the project, which includes managing progress and expenditure reports.

Requirements

- A university degree, preferably in the Humanities, in Cultural Studies, or in Information Science
- Certified experience in managing projects on an international scale, preferably in the field of digital libraries, online archives or audio-visual archives
- Experience in electronic publishing and familiarity with the information technology backgrounds and concepts relevant to the field of digital libraries (data and metadata standards, formats, interfaces etc.), respectively the ability to become quickly acquainted with the relevant subject matter on your own
- Basic understanding of the economic and legal framework of electronic publishing, in particular regarding audio-visual content - A high degree of independence, initiative and responsibility, an above average talent for organisation and communication - Readiness for business trips and an ability to handle stress - Business fluent English and German. Any further European language (French in particular) would be an advantage - Sound knowledge of relevant computer applications (MS Office)

The Salary is based on German civil service pay scale BAT IIa.

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Collections Manager within its Film Department. Founded in 1935 as the Film Library, the department's collection now includes more than 22,000 films and four million film stills. It has the strongest international film collection in the United States that incorporates all periods and genres. The film collection is stored in the Museum's Celeste Bartos Film Preservation Center, a state-of-the-art facility that is located in Hamlin Pennsylvania.

The Collections Manager will report to the Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film and will hold the following responsibilities:

Formulates collection assessment timeline. Develops preservation priorities and strategies. Develops acquisition and de-accessioning strategies.

Manages all film collections staff including Film Conservator, Film Department Cataloguer, Film Preservation Center Manager and staff. Also manages fellows and interns in New York City and Hamlin.

Liaises with other Museum departments on collection and facility-related issues.

Oversees film print inspection and weeding.

Implements database transition/upgrade.

Manages archive relationships in the field (FIAF and AMIA).

Defines and implements 21st century strategies for the Film Study Center.

The Wellcome Trust is the largest charity in the UK. It funds innovative biomedical research, in the UK and internationally, with the aim of improving human and animal health.

The Wellcome Library's department for the Moving Image and Sound Collection is undertaking a digitisation project where over 100 hours of moving image and sound content will be digitised. The moving image film and video holdings range from material originating from the Wellcome Trust to donated materials in a variety formats.

The project, Wellcome Film, will develop the Library's collections and will help us make a greater contribution to the history of medicine, biomedical science education, science communication and the public understanding of science.

Reporting to the Curator of the Moving Image and Sound Collection and working within a small team, the successful applicant will bring hands-on technical skills and facilitate workflow to achieve project deliverables. Among other things this role will create and maintain inventories of material identified for digitisation, organise the film and video holdings in preparation for processing and cataloguing, evaluate and document condition of material to an agreed system, create catalogue metadata and catalogue and propose segment breaks.

Candidates should have:
* a degree (BA or BSc) and archival or collections management experience

Internship Opportunities at the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum
AUDIOVISUAL INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE WITH THE NIXON PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM
Assist staff in archival processing projects, perform holdings maintenance, and participate in reference service

Complete one large or a number of smaller archival projects involving special media holdings (moving image, recorded sound and still photography). Regardless of size, each project will consist of the preservation evaluation, arrangement and description of the records and the creation of detailed finding aids in electronic form. Some liaison work with the National Archives and Records Administrations (NARA's) dynamic media laboratory may be necessary. Potential interns should be aware that a portion of the assignment will involve holdings maintenance (i.e., re-containerizing, inventory, viewing or listening to media for content, shelving, and transferring old identification information to new containers and/or into an electronic file). Light lifting of boxes or other objects up to 25 pounds may be required. Successful applicants will be exposed to all phases of reference activity within the National Archives Presidential Library system.

The intern will participate in a self-directed work team responsible for all phases of special media preservation, processing and reference. The experience involves close coordination with other team members and learning how special media records are handled within NARA'S Presidential Library system.

Qualifications:

This is a post-graduate-degree, time-limited position working with and expanding the African American-related materials at the Southern Historical Collection (SHC) located in the Wilson Library. The Overholser Fellow will work under the supervision of the director of the SHC. The SHC houses distinctive archival collections centered on the history of the American South, and is located in the Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The ARTstor Library of over 700,000 images is currently available at over 900 educational institutions.

ARTstor seeks a Production Coordinator who will coordinate the intake of images and data from contributors. The Production Coordinator will report to ARTstor's Director of Operations.

Responsibilities
- Work with Director of Operations to create project workflows. - Create production management spreadsheets in Excel or other databases for vendors and contributors.
- Track image production received from vendors and contributors in production management spreadsheets and in ARTstor's digital asset management system (DAM) (Artesia).
- Upload images and management data into ARTstor's DAM. Add administrative metadata into the DAM as necessary.
- Prepare image files for Quality Control staff. - Inventory image files and physical media such as CDs, external hard drives, and back-up tapes. Supervise staff in labeling and preparing back-up media for archival storage.
- Supervise Production Associates creating inventories of original source material (slides, prints, negatives, etc.) - Work with vendors and content providers to solve any problems. - Assist Technology, Metadata, User Services, and other ARTstor departments in locating images when necessary.
- Create cataloging databases in Filemaker Pro for the Metadata Department as needed
- Prepare final image files for release into ARTstor; compare image files to metadata records using basic Unix scripts - Understand the reasons for the imaging specifications for a project's digital source material, and the basic cataloging/metadata work requirements.
-Work with contributors, vendors, and appropriate ARTstor staff in a professional and collegial manner.

Position Overview:
The Exhibition Specialist will be involved in all aspects of the design, planning, production and installation of reproduction and/or original artwork exhibits mounted by the Animation Research Library (ARL) for Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS). Moving Image Preservation Specialist - NYU Libraries

The Preservation Department of New York University Libraries seeks an energetic individual to manage NYU Libraries' moving image and sound preservation program. The program comprises a suite of activities that includes appraisal, format identification, condition review, cleaning, re-housing, and preservation re-mastering for motion picture film, video and sound recordings. The moving image preservation specialist also oversees grant-related projects. S/he directs, trains and supervises full-time and part-time staff to assist in these activities. Moving image and sound materials currently held in NYU Libraries include: 8mm, 16mm, 35mm motion picture film and a mixture of video formats spread across several archives and special collections. An assortment of formats can also be found among audio collections.

The moving image preservation specialist also assists in the development of preservation goals and objectives, procedures, and policies for moving image and sound materials. S/he evaluates collections to assess preservation needs and collaborates with curators in setting priorities and arranging treatment and processing schedules. The specialist implements standard procedures for handling, examining, describing, and assessing moving image collections; ensures adherence to established access, storage, and handling policies for these materials; manages workflow for media transfers, including preservation re-mastering operations to meet preservation standards; communicates with vendors for outside services as needed; and manages the day-to-day activities of an active moving image preservation program. In administering the program, the specialist trains and supervises one full-time staff and two part-time graduate assistants from the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program (MIAP) in the NYU Cinema Studies Department as well as additional student assistants as needed. The incumbent will assist in grant-writing and grant project initiatives as needed and supervise staff working on grant-related programs for media within the Libraries preservation department.

The moving image preservation specialist position is a permanent professional appointment and reports to the head of the Libraries' Barbara Goldsmith Preservation and Conservation Department. NYU Libraries has an active preservation program for motion picture video and audio collections equipped with two labs designed to facilitate viewing, describing, cleaning, re-housing, and reformatting of moving image materials. An audio lab is under development. The specialist will manage the moving image and sound preservation program and provide leadership as the program continues to develop and mature.

Qualifications: Formal training in moving image technology or equivalent experience, together with extensive experience in moving image archiving and preservation, including knowledge of the recommended practices and guidelines for archival restoration and transfer of motion picture, video and sound materials; strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and productively in a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

The Restoration Project Manager at Jewish Educational Media will be responsible to evolve JEM’s multimedia holdings into a full-fledged, modern video, audio and photographic archive. Our organization is committed to this evolution, and has already devoted many resources to this cause. However, we now require a hands-on project manager to begin the project.

This entails, at first, overseeing the transfer of our video and audio materials, most of which are currently on aging, formats onto long-term preservation formats. The Restoration Project Manger will have responsibility for managing and organizing the collections. Coordinates schedules for sending materials out for preservation, inspects materials before and after restoration by vendors. Trouble-shoots film/video archive materials problems. Assists with grant implementation of grant projects.

Extensive video experience, particularly in a restoration and preservation environment, is a must. Technical knowledge of the various video and audio media, of new preservation formats, and digital media formats and of the video production environment are essential.

Successfully demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including the ability to draft reports and maintain preservation records. Position requires hands-on technical expertise, as well as interpersonal skills, such as the ability to deal effectively with vendors, JEM staff, researchers and the general public.

Position also requires the ability to work independently and with others within the organization, keeping detailed preservation records; able to work with accuracy and attention to detail.

After good workflow and proper systems have been established for the restoration project, the Project Manager may evolve into the role of Archivist/Curator. These would be some of the responsibilities involved:

Ø Assess state of JEM’s video archive and implement necessary changes to enable better use of the video, audio and images.
Ø Process and inventory new and existing collections.
Ø Categorize existing tapes and choose appropriate software and methods for database and archival system.
Ø Ensure footage is easily accessible for both internal and external use.
Ø Make long and short term decisions about direction/practices of those working with the video archive.
Ø Help establish and maintain an administrative system for the licensing and sale of footage.
Ø Develop a database that will keep track of customer and payment information, and allow for the creation of licenses.
Ø Ensure that the tools and methods of the archive system are kept up-to-date with current practices.
Ø Develop proactive footage sales program.
Ø Assist with licensing footage from the Archive.

Experience: The candidate should have work experience in a company specializing in videotape restoration. Audio, film and/or photographic restoration and preservation experience are a plus, as well.

Duties:
The National Archives is seeking a highly motivated and skilled manager to lead a small technical team responsible for audio and video preservation in its Sydney Office. The position provides the opportunity to help build a team, the technical infrastructure and the future direction for audiovisual preservation, particularly in the digital domain, in a national organisation, which helps Australians better understand their culture and government.

The National Archives of Australia has the responsibility to preserve and manage the archives of the nation - the significant records created by the Australian Government. This includes audiovisual material created by our national broadcasters and government agencies. Our holdings include a vast range of formats from sound recordings on lacquer disk through to π" tape recordings and video recordings on 2" videotape, U-matic tape and Digital Betacam.

In addition to audiovisual content on physical media, the National Archives is managing incoming digital file formats as well as creating in-house digital records as part of its preservation copying program. It is the responsibility of the Digital and Audiovisual Preservation section to implement preservation strategies including copying of the most at-risk records owing to technical obsolescence and physical deterioration in accordance with relevant legislation including the Archives Act (1983).

As a team leader you will mentor and supervise the technical staff of the audio and video preservation unit. You will use your extensive knowledge of current and obsolete audio and video formats, and production equipment, to plan technical infrastructure improvements and build up the expertise in your team members.
The AV Manager (Audio & Video) will be expected to:

1. Undertake project work relating to the development and upgrade to video and audio facilities with particular emphasis on digitisation technologies.

2. Support the Assistant Director with the management, work planning, co-ordination, budgeting, strategic planning and monitoring of preservation projects and operations relating to the audio and video units.

3. Manage a technical team, clearly communicate a sense of direction and effectively assist and guide team members to achieve outcomes.

4. Conduct research and development relating to audiovisual preservation, including the development of technical and preservation standards, procedures and guidelines.

The successful candidate will also be proactive, be able to think outside the square and be a team player, with excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Conservator to join time-based media conservation for up to 6 months. Time-based Media Conservation is responsible for works in the Collection that have a film, video, slide, audio, computer or performance based element, many of these works are complex installations.

This role involves the examination, conservation and preparation of works for display at all Tate Sites and the examination, documentation and treatment of Time-based media works of art in Tate's Collection.

You will need to hold a recognised qualification in conservation with professional experience which has lead to the ability to work independently to assess the condition, develop and implement conservation treatments. You will have proven analytical skills with the ability to carry out research into the materials and techniques where novel or complex conservation problems arise.

Recognising the lack of opportunity for conservators to specialise in the conservation of time-based media works of art, applications will be considered from experienced conservators who can demonstrate relevant transferable skills and an ability to apply your knowledge to new challenges. North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking Seeks Associate Curator
The primary purpose of this position is the management of the department, including staffing, services, collections, and facilities; and to support the research and study of cinema at NCSA by making films from the collection available for study purposes, for individual viewing appointments, and for classroom screenings. The Associate Curator will supervise a team of two archivists and anywhere from 6-15 temporary student workers. The Associate Curator will oversee the contracts and invoices for any loan agreements or special events, and be responsible for the hiring of staff, supervision of the payroll, and any purchasing for the archives or exhibition facilities.

Responsibilities include receiving, inventorying, and descriptive/subject cataloging of the archive’s moving image collections.; interpretation of cataloging policy; technical direction for accessioning and cataloging; management of unprocessed material; ensuring collection material is properly handled and kept secure; and supervision of dispensation of archive materials through loan programs.

Qualifications:
· Completion of a four-year program in a college or university preferably with major emphasis on coursework in the visual or performing arts and 5 years work experience with a moving image archive, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. · In-depth knowledge of film history and technology through research and scholarship in the arts and media
· Demonstrated knowledge of bibliographic description and control of moving image materials
· Experience in the operation of film handling and editing equipment, and film and video viewing equipment
· Knowledge of emerging information technologies and digital initiatives
· Demonstrated commitment to work cooperatively and maintain effective, creative, and flexible working relationships with colleagues, faculty, and students
· Demonstrated ability to promote collaborative and forward-looking initiatives, services, and programs
· Ability to supervise and provide progressive leadership in managing and supervising a diverse staff.
· Ability to lift and retrieve materials that weigh at least 40 lbs. · Familiarity with state protocols is desirable.
